Israeli, Palestinian DJs plan joint performance in London
By Idit Avrahami, Haaretz Correspondent
Two disk jockeys, one Israeli and one Palestinian, are planning
put on a joint performance in London on December 21.
Israeli Srulik Einhorn and Palestinian Khalil Kamal have
performed together in the past, along with Jordanian DJ Kalis, at
the Ha'Oman 17 Club in Jerusalem, despite initial attempts by the
Interior Ministry to block Kalis's entry into Israel.
The London party, titled "Bridge of Peace," is being organized by
Einhorn along with the World Zionist Organization. Einhorn
invited Kalis to perform at the London party as well, but Kalis
refused, because it was being organized by the WZO.
"WZO officials approached us after they read about the Jerusalem
party on the Internet and invited us to come and perform in a
party that would show young Jews in London that cooperation
between Jews and Arabs is possible," said Einhorn.
The connection between Einhorn and Khalil was forged by musician
Roy Chiki Arad, who met Khalil during a tour of Ramallah. "We met
a few times and played a few pieces for each other, and we felt
that there was a connection between us," said Einhorn. "I don't
think the cooperation between us will dramatically affect
prospects for peace in the Middle East, but we really enjoy
performing together, and this allows the crowd to see that
cooperation and coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians is
Khalil Kamal was born in Jerusalem, but has resided in Ramallah
for the past few years. The 37-year-old father of three has been
performing for 11years. The 26-year-old Einhorn has played at
numerous parties in Tel Aviv and is the musical producer of
"Angel Tears," which combines ethnic and electronic music. The
two will play Arabic music with modern adaptations, and will be
accompanied by Einhorn's artistic manager, Guy Asif.
