Nonie Darwish was on the ZOA Middle East report today at Noon with co-hosts, Lori Lowenthal Marcus and Steve Feldman of the Philadlephia region of the Zionist Organziation of America (ZOA).
She announced that she had be 're-invited' to speak at Brown Hillel. This after a maelstrom of criticism was launched against Brown Hillel and Brown University for knuckling under to intimidation of the Muslim imam and the campus Muslim Students Association who found her talk 'objectionable.' You may recall that the Hillel contingent didn't want to ruin a 'beautiful relationship" wth Muslim students at the elite Ivy league institution in providence, Rhode Island.
Earlier this week, my buddy, Andy Bostom graciously consented to vacate his talk sponsored by a conseravtive group at Brown University to permit Darwish to speak. Apparently, as you will see in the notice on the Brown University Hillel Foundation website-see below- they had 'second thoughts.' Now Darwish will speak early next year.
But Brown has another controversy. This time it is in 'disorganizing' a Christian Evangelical student group from presence and support as a student organization. An action behalf of the group has been brought by FIRE- an educational civil liberties group.
Seems as if there are some religions that Brown will tolerate and some that it won't.
But then this is a campus that undertook a mea culpa for the purported slaving activities of one of the original Brown family founders in the 18th Century.
But circling back to Darwish, the reversal of Brown Hillel could not have been achieved if it hadn't been for the outrage expressed in email, faxes and phone calls to the group's executive director, Rabbi Serena Eisenberg and Brown University Ruth Simmons. Simmons at least has some gumption. She defended former Harvard President Larry Summers in the controversy over remarks about women professionals in academia.
Brava to courageous Nonie Darwish. Credit this reprieve for her up to the collective indignation of all of us who were outraged and blogging activism.
