Newspapers controlled by the supposedly moderate Palestinian Authority glorified the perpetrators of the recent Dimona bombing as Shahid martyrs, a high Muslim honor. The papers included the official Al-Hayat al-Jadida which is directly controlled by PA, as well as the Palestinian dailies Al-Iyam and Al-Quds also defined the bombers as glorious martyrs, or shahids. The Palestinian Authority has an often repeated obligation to curb incitement.
According to Al-Hayat al-Jadida of February 5, "The perpetrators of the operation died as shahids ... an Israeli was killed and eleven were wounded in the Dimona operation,"
The two Palestinian Arabs who attempted to murder Israelis in Kfar Etzyon's Makor Haim High School several weeks ago were also described as Shahids in various publications.
