It is no wonder that Fatah officials are uninterested in freeing Barghouti, as he is the architect of the National and Islamic Front, and would move to legitimize Hamas and the Islamic Jihad. He is also the instigator of the Tanzim and Al-Aqsa factions that Palestinian Authority is trying to disarm. Letting him out of jail is asking for trouble.
Hamas, Fatah, And Freeing Barghouti
Senior Hamas official Muhammad Nazal has told the London daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi that senior Fatah officials have asked a European country that is mediating between Israel and Hamas in the matter of prisoner exchange not to include Marwan Barghouti in the list of Palestinian prisoners to be freed by Hamas.
While sources in the European country said that Fatah's request came because it feared that freeing Barghouti will be to Hamas's credit, Hamas is stating that it was aimed at preventing an upset in the Fatah leadership's internal balance.
