Sderot: Impressions from the Capital of Qassams

This account was written just before the cease fire went into effect.

Out to Sderot again this week, this time with a date to meet a family on Kibbutz Migvan. There are only about 8 urban kibbutzim in the country and this is the oldest one. Aside from not being farmers, it’s not so different from the regular kibbutzim I’ve known.

Sderot: Impressions from the Town on the Edge

Still no sensations, except the ride there. Taking the sherut [collective taxi] to Sderot reminds me of that scene in Dr Strangelove when he rides the missile: one rockets there in fear and lands, in this case quietly, in a town under fire.

Palestinians: Our way or the highway

Those who blame Israel for the perennial impasse in peace negotiations, including the Palestinians themselves, are fond of portraying the desperate plight of the Palestinians under the supposedly oppressive occupation. One would think that a desperate person or a desperate people would seek to improve their lot by any means possible, and would be eager for the chance for peace and freedom. That is evidently not the case for the Palestinians.

Gaza Fulbright Scholars- USA strikes out again

More than once, I have expressed my anxiety about Israel's virtually total dependence on the United States (See for example The U.S. and Israel and The United States Mandate for Palestine). I am certainly not anti-American. The United States has admittedly been Israel's greatest supporter in the world arena, and has given generous aid to Israel, as it has to other countries. The support comes at a price however, and that is a price that no country should be expected to pay.

Story of a special Zionist - Miranda Jones

Miranda Jones could be any young Jewish American who is interested in Israel, except for her skin color. Well OK, that makes her story very different in many ways.
