Ik herinner me ooit enkele boeken van ene "Issberner Haldane" gelezen te hebben van ergens in de dertiger jaren. Daaruit herinner ik me dat het voor ariërs werd aanbevolen om niet met niet-arische of joodse vrouwen seksueel kontact te hebben, dit omdat dan de zuivere arische energie van zijn scheppenden geslacht, het bloed, het zuiver arische karakter en de cultuur niet vermengd en afwijkend zou worden.
Een staaltje racistisch denken met een opmerkelijk voordeel voor de potentiéle niet-arische slachtoffers.
Dergelijk denken zal makkelijk de kop opsteken in iedere cultuur waar de eigen persoonlijke identiteit vasthangt aan etniciteit, geloof en nationaliteit en die eigen cultuur/etniciteit een intrinsieke eigen taak toebedeeld wordt op het wereldtoneel. Waarom niet ook onder israeliërs.

het onderzoek is niet methodologisch opgezet, misschien waren sommige ondervraagde soldaten homosexueel?
echte mannen verafschuwen verkrachting en andere wreedheden. bovendien, je weet maar nooit wie daar al geweest was bij die vrouwen.en misschien waren die vrouwen besmet met geslachts ziekten zoals HIV wat veel voorkomt bij geitenneukers en anderen die bestialiteit bedrijven.

Racistisch Israelisch leger verkracht te weinig Palestijnen?

Door mensenrechtenorganisaties, vredesorganisaties, linkse politici en journalisten wordt het Israëlische leger van de meest verschrikkelijke misdaden beschuldigd, worden gevallen van wreedheid, pesten, arrogantie en nodeloos geweld gepresenteerd als normale en dagelijkse praktijken, en vaak verbonden met een zogenaamd Zionistisch ethos van superioriteit en exclusiviteit. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat een studie die de afwezigheid van verkrachtingen door het Israëlische leger mede verklaart vanuit eenzelfde ethos, leidde tot enkele cynische besprekingen door rechtse commentatoren, die Tal Nitzan, schrijfster van het betreffende 'onderzoek', ervan beschuldigen het Israëlische leger uit te maken voor racistisch en schuldig aan oorlogsmisdaden vanwege het niet verkrachten van Palestijnse vrouwen. Palestijnse vrouwen zouden te onaantrekkelijk zijn maar vooral ook door de Israëlische soldaten niet als medemensen worden beschouwd. Bij mij roept dat onmiddellijk de vraag op of er een verschil is met Druze en Arabische soldaten. Zou Nitzans these kloppen, dan zouden zij immers wel vrouwen verkrachten, of zouden zij zich het Joodse superioriteitsgevoel geheel eigen hebben gemaakt?

Terecht stelt Ami Isseroff in "Help! Rape!" (op zusterblog Zionation) dat we dit onderzoek niet met een paar cynische zinnen moeten afdoen, omdat het onderwerp daarvoor te belangrijk is en dit bovendien de studie geen recht doet. Aangezien de studie in het Hebreeuws is geschreven en hij hem heeft gelezen, baseer ik me hier op zijn bevindingen. In haar inleiding beweert Nitzan inderdaad het soort dingen dat makkelijk tot de bovengenoemde absurde conclusies kan worden herleid, maar dan in het wollige jargon van het post-structuralisme:

An important claim that arises from the study is that because of the obscurity of the spatial border in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the ethno-national borders are internalized, in the bodies of the soldiers, and crossing of the borders is rejected physically, as a sort of auto-disciplinary mechanism that accompanies them everywhere they go.

An additional claim is that the absence of directed military rape constitutes an alternative way to achieve the same political goals. In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict it can be seen that the rarity of military rape only reinforces the ethnic borders and clarifies the inter-ethnic distinctions, in the same way as directed military rape would do.

The central claim is that while absence of directed military rape is an alternative road to achieving the same political goals, absence of symptomatic rape is not an alternative way of implementing the same personal goals, but is evidence of a clear policy that rejects it and works energetically to prevent it. That is, the declared absence of symptomatic military rape achieves the political goals that absence of directed rape achieves. Since military rape is harnessing of the behavior of the individual to the needs of the collective, therefore lack of symptomatic rape is an additional step in subordinating the individual to the needs of the society. This is actually the ability to enter the body of the individual and to inscribe in it abhorrence of actions he is likely to perform for himself, since they are not consistent with the needs of the collective.

Het bijbrengen van soldaten dat verkrachting verkeerd is wordt hier beschreven als 'subordinating the individual to the needs of the society', als een vorm van hersenspoeling om ons te gedragen naar de behoeften van het collectief. In goede post-structuralistische traditie zet zij de zaken op zijn kop, door het bijbrengen van normen en waarden, het ontwikkelen van een geweten, met als doel het voorkomen van misdaden als verkrachtingen, als een welhaast fascistoïde praktijk neer te zetten. Nitzan plaatst zichzelf dan ook expliciet in deze traditie:

Tal Nitzans thesis comes from the never-never land of post-structuralism. She informs us on page 41, "The illusion of the objective observer who can describe the culture of the research subjects in a positivist way and bring to the world the truth as it is is 'in reality' was exploded long ago." Having done the ritual obligatory dissing of empiricism and positivism, and with generous citations of Michel Foucault, likewise obligatory in such studies, Tal Nitzan believes she is now free to do anything she wants to do.

Haar studie is, naar eigen zeggen, kwalitatief en bestaat uit open interviews met 25 soldaten. Ze maakt, aldus Ami Isseroff, geen gebruik van een standaard vragenlijst of probeert op enige andere manier de antwoorden te ordenen en te toetsen aan een meetbare (falsifieerbare) hypothese. Ze pikt eruit wat haar van pas komt en negeert wat haar niet bevalt. Zo beschrijven sommige soldaten uitgebreid de ethische code van het leger, waarin de waardigheid van elk individu centraal staat. In de woorden van Isseroff:

There was apparently no systematic interview protocol, or at least none was recorded, and there is no way to quantify or objectively evaluate the results. One can get from this river of words, whatever suits one's political or theoretical fancy, since there is no way to decide that the above quotes about ethics and defense are more typical or representative than other quotes where soldiers say that Arab Palestinian women are "Ichsa," unattractive, "penguins" (because of their traditional dress) and the like. Tal Nitzan makes much of these quotes, which are the result, according to her, of the soldiers having internalized the IDF ethic and having constructed mechanisms to enforce the discipline within themselves.

Not only are the quotes of the interviewees presented as a great tohu va vohu - a primordial chaos with no way to distinguish what is significant and representative from what is not, but the conclusions of the researcher are presented in the same way. In the introductory abstract she is sure that the explanation of the lack of rapes on the part of IDF soldiers lies in an enforced political racism, ignoring all the evidence to the contrary that she presents in the body of the study.

Vreemd genoeg is haar these niet alleen door haar professoren goedgekeurd, maar bekroond door de Israel Sociology Association. Het is een mode die misschien is overgewaaid uit de VS, waar dergelijke post-structuralistische, neomarxistische en andere vooral niet empirisch verifieerbare stromingen in de sociale wetenschappen erg hip zijn. Dat de grens tussen wetenschap en politiek daarbij geregeld wordt overschreden, schijnt voor sommigen eerder een pluspunt dan een probleem te zijn. Het bekendste Israëlische voorbeeld is ongetwijfeld Ilan Pappe, die letterlijk heeft gezegd dat feiten er voor hem niet toe doen en zijn doel is het op te nemen voor de underdog. Pappe nam het op voor een student die een vermeende massaslachting in 1948 in Tantura onderzocht en daarbij interviews met toenmalige Joodse strijders vervalste. Na oproepen om zijn eigen land en universiteit te boycotten, en acties voor een onbeperkt recht op terugkeer van Palestijnse vluchtelingen, voelde Pappe zich niet meer welkom in Israël, en vertrok naar een Britse universiteit, waar hij ongetwijfeld een gewillig oor vindt voor zijn antizionistische leugens. Alleen om het feit dat ze anti-Israël zijn, zijn bepaalde mensen, boeken, ideeën en organisaties bijzonder populair in bepaalde kringen. Ik vraag mij af of een studie over een minder politiek of gevoelig onderwerp, op dezelfde manier uitgevoerd, ook een prijs zou hebben gekregen. Of, in de woorden van Ami Isseroff:

If you claim that lead floats and helium balloons sink, you had better be prepared to back up your words with evidence. If you absurdly proclaim to the world, despite the evidence, that Israeli soldiers don't rape people because they have internalized some sinister policy of the Israeli government, you will nonetheless find a receptive audience among people who hate the occupation more than they love truth.

Regardless of what Tal Nitzan claimed, the only thing that is certain is that from a non-systematic study of 25 unrepresentative soldiers who say many self-contradictory things, which are then sifted in a biased way, it is not possible to conclude anything. It is impossible to achieve objectivity, but there are certainly ways of improving the chances of approaching objectivity through structured research and systematic examination of evidence.

Nitzans studie laat op welhaast hilarische wijze zien tot welke absurde hoogten het huidige antizionisme reikt. Zij stelt het leger in een kwaad daglicht voor het niet plegen van een veel voorkomende en walgelijke oorlogsmisdaad. Dit is uiteraard niet alleen te danken aan de hoge ethische normen van het leger, maar ook aan profane zaken als dat Israëlische soldaten geregeld weekendverlof hebben en zo minder 'nood' hebben, terwijl bijvoorbeeld Amerikaanse soldaten in Irak het een half jaar of soms langer zonder hun lief moeten stellen. Het was interessant geweest als zij andere legers in haar studie had betrokken, maar ook dat was blijkbaar teveel moeite of paste niet in haar post-structuralistische aanpak en conclusies.

Zullen Dries van Agt, Anja Meulenbelt en Een Ander Joods Geluid nu met nieuwe 'bewijzen' komen van Israëls racistische politiek en exclusivistische ideologie? Het zou me niet verbazen.
