The crimes against humanity of Richard Goldstone II

[This is the second part of an analysis of the Goldstone Report and his recent 'retraction.' Part I of Goldstone is here ]

Richard Goldstone’s report was not an isolated error. It was a weapon in a propaganda arsenal that has been used to make an organization of fascist racist gangsters seem like a legitimate actor, to make genocide into a noble goal and deliberate murder of children into an honorable tactic. Goldstone knew very well that there could never be “evenhandedness” between the Hamas and Israel,just as it would be preposterous for a judge to be “evenhanded” between the rapist, the victim and police who arrested the perpetrator. It was not a one-time betrayal. It was, as I wrote, a stab in the back that keeps on stabbing.

The crimes against humanity of Richard Goldstone I

Analysts are still wondering about the motivation, the impact and even the meaning of the very strange article authored by jurist Richard Goldstone about the Goldstone Report. The report alleged Israeli “war crimes” in Operation Cast Lead (Gaza War of 2008-9). The article, appropriately enough, appeared on April Fools day in the Washington Post and may have been a recantation (or was it?)  of the findings of the original report. A great effort has been and is expended by Goldstone and others to obscure that which should be perfectly clear. Thus, it may be worthwhile to try to untangle the real meaning, impact and motivation of both the report and of the more recent article.

The Palestinian Tahrir Square

Real life events can often illustrate a point far better and faster than logical discussion. Defenders of the Palestinian cause spin the “struggle” as a noble fight for freedom in the tradition of the French underground and the South African or American rights struggles. It is not so.

Israel Peace Week

It’s time to do something about anti-Israel propaganda on campus.

Israel Peace Week highlights the positive aspects of Israeli society.

The revolutions and attempted revolutions sweeping the Arab Middle East underline the fact that Israel is a beacon of democracy, progress and hope and an oasis of human rights in this region. That fact cannot be hidden by well-financed PR campaigns and empty racist slogans.

If there is no Israel Peace Week at your university, get busy organizing it!! If there is going to be one, be sure and participate.

At UC Berkeley, for example Israel Peace and Diversity Week began this week (March 6). The schedule is here http://proisraelbaybloggers.blogspot.com/2011/02/israel-peace-and-diversity-week-at-uc.html

For more information about upcoming events or about setting up Israel Peace Week contact or

Website: www.israelpeaceweek.org

Yet more information:

http://israelcampusbeat.org/home/news/11-03-01/Students_Use_Network_to_Highlight_Drive_for_Peace.aspx

Israel Peace Week should replace ignorance with facts. It should educate students about Middle East realities, and get them concerned about real issues of democracy, peace and human rights in the Middle East.

Be PROACTIVE Don’t wait until there is an anti-Israel event at your campus.

HRW Condemns Hamas War Criminals

You read that right. It doesn’t seem like a hoax either. Human Rights Watch actually condemned the indiscriminate murder of Jewish Israeli civilians by Hamas terrorists. The condemnation, unbelievably, was not “even-handed.” It did not condemn us rotten evil imperialist Zionist settler war criminals for defending ourselves against the Hamas.

Understanding the Arab Revolts: Where is the Middle East?

The Arab revolts of 2011 have a message that is not just for “progressives” (see The message of the Arab revolts for progressives ). It is this: The Middle East is much more than Israel and the Palestinians.

Viva Mubarak! Say what???

The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;

Marc Antony in Wm Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, Act 3, Scene 2

The bard was wrong for once. Departed leaders are idealized, a custom which probably began before the days of the Pharaohs. After the death of Caesar, it become the custom to deify the Roman emperors. To perpetuate the memory of Augustus, he or his sycophants took care to leave a funerary record of his good works, the Res Gestae Divi Augusti, or “The things done by the Divine Augustus.” The historian Tacitus left a less flattering record.

The message of the Arab revolts for progressives

There are still a great many things that are unclear about the Arab revolts. Israelis, for example, watch nervously to find out if the new Egyptian government will honor the peace treaty. One message, however, is shouted out loud and clear to “progressive” opponents of Israel in Europe and the USA.  Unbelievably, nobody is talking about it:

The revolts exposed the dirty little secret of most Arab and Islamic regimes. It is a “secret” that almost everyone in the Middle East knows, and it turns  all the dogmatic cant about “Zionist imperialism” and “Apartheid Israel” into ludicrous drivel.
